About Stein Metzger,
UCLA Head Beach Volleyball Coach

Stein Metzger, the 2017 and 2018 Pac-12 Coach of the Year and the 2017 and 2018 USMC/AVCA National Coach of the Year, enters his 11th season as the UCLA Beach Volleyball Head Coach in 2023 after guiding UCLA to back-to-back NCAA Championships in 2018 (40-4) and in 2019 (35-3). This past season, he guided UCLA to a third-place finish at the NCAA Championship in 2022, finishing the year with an overall record of 34-9.

Metzger produced his first Olympian in 2021 when Sarah Sponcil qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Sponcil became the 20th all-time beach volleyball Olympian that UCLA has produced. The 20 total Olympians to come out of UCLA (male and female) are the most of any school (Stanford is second with seven) and Sponcil is the 11th Bruin woman to qualify for the Olympics, which also leads the nation (Stanford is second with seven).

A U.S. Olympian and UCLA Hall of Famer, Metzger enters the 2023 season with an overall record of 226-57 (.799) and has gone 184-29 (.864) in the last six seasons (2017-22)

Over the first three seasons of Bruin sand volleyball, Metzger, who is one of UCLA’s NCAA-record 20 Beach Volleyball Olympians, led the program to 20 dual wins (10 in 2015) and coached three sets of pairs’ teams to the AVCA National Championships, including Zoë Nightingale and Kamila Tan in 2015. The fast-growing discipline became an NCAA-sponsored sport in 2016, the first year an NCAA Championship was awarded in beach volleyball.

In addition to his collegiate coaching accolades, Metzger has trained U.S., French and Israeli National Beach teams. He has also coached with the USA Volleyball Elite Development Program.
